EU programmes, especially Framework Pogrammes for Research and Innovation such as Horizon Europe, oblige beneficiaries to exploit the results produced, either for their benefit or by making them available to others.  The exploitation duty often presents many nuances and hence makes navigation of this process challenging and error-prone.

The webinar consists of two parts. The first part  offers an overview of the search process prior to IP protection: how to confirm the novelty of a research result or an EU Mark by searching relevant databases/sites. In the case of research results, it covers how a patentability study is built to decide whether to pursue patenting. In the case of a Mark, how to decide if other marks in the market can conflict with the proposed one. An interactive game on the protection of a commercial product and its EU Mark follows!

In the second part, the webinar describes how to manage IP across the different phases of a Horizon Europe project — proposal writing, Grant Agreement Preparation (including the role of the Consortium Agreement), and project implementation through to closure. It also helps participants navigate common pitfalls and challenges around protecting research and innovation results, a knowledge valuable both for proposal writing and the final implementation.

The webinar will address the following points:

  • Patent Novelty and Patentability Studies: Search of Patent and Non-Patent Databases
  • Preparing a Patentability report
  • EU Trade Mark (EUTM) and the Nice Classification
  • Search portals for names and logos. Possible Conflicts with Existing brands and names
  • Practical example: an agricultural device (dosifier) and the GreenUp brand
  • Managing IP during proposal writing, Grant Agreement Preparation and project implementation/closure
  • IP as a driver of Exploitation under the Horizon Europe Model Grant Agreement
  • Quiz / Final Survey
